Well, a straight-up corridor shooter will probably see something of a cult following ala Serious Sam. I've seen a bit of enthusiasm over well-built but otherwise straightforward FPSes recently as well, such as Singularity and even the latest Wolfenstein.

It'll probably get a certain amount of attention just because, hey, it's DNF! Finally!

Apparently it's playable at PAX. That said, does anyone really care about a generic corridor shooter any more? Duke Nukem's format was dead when Doom 3 came out, six years ago.

Also, I think I dug up some materials from the campaign Dan referred to above. I no longer remember the context of the following diagram, but it seemed amusing enough:

Seriously.

I dunno, I guess I can see it. Supposedly DNF was "6-8 months from release" several times during its' development cycle, only to be scrapped and restarted in a newer, prettier, cutting-edgier engine. I don't have trouble imagining another company with actual editorial control and a publisher leaning on them finishing the project.

Supposedly a lot of "late-beta-level" footage has surfaced since the game was cancelled, too.

I also couldn't help chuckling that we're only a few days shy of the SIXTH ANNIVERSARY of this thread.

RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE

The hilarity. Will it never end?

So basically, GamersGate functions like GOG for new games?

More or less. It's much less discriminating about what games it distributes than the other digital stores. You can find all kinds of crazy translated Russian games on there.

It also tends to release games a few hours earlier, due to being based in Sweden and thus releasing on a GMT-based timescale instead of Pacific time. Not really an issue in North America, but it's much less annoying than waiting until late in the day over here.

I don't think PA has mentioned them, but there were a couple Slashdot articles about them... Of course, the dozen slashdot users who actually pay for games probably don't account for the sales we're seeing.

10% discount on Gamersgate as well. Also, it's #4 on the Steam bestseller list, just below Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Not a bad showing for a no-name indie game.

That is indeed pretty impressive.  I know they got a bit of coverage on the blogs, but did they also get a mention at Penny Arcade or something?

If they didn't yet, could you imagine the $TEXAS these guys would suddenly see (literally) overnight?

I know they got a mention on Rock, Paper, Shotgun, which is a big name in Europe. And simply being on Steam will probably get them noticed elsewhere.
